UNITED STATES PONY CLUB RIDING CENTER
Thought you were too old for Pony Club?
Check out the USPC Horsemasters Program for Adults!
Formed in 2001, the USPC Horsemasters Program for Adults was developed to meet the needs of Pony Club parents and other adults who want to learn more about horses and ponies and ultimately become more secure in their knowledge about horsemanship and riding skills. Horsemasters Groups can be affiliated with a club, center or region and membership is open to anyone who is not a current Participating Member and is 18 years of age or older.
The Horsemasters Program is based on the USPC Standards of Proficiency. These Standards allow for evaluation of members for in three primary areas: Horse Management, On the Flat, and Over Fences. Horsemasters may participate in the riding disciplines which include Eventing, Dressage, Show Jumping, Hunt seat, and Western, among many others.
Beginning certification levels (D-1 – D-3 HMX) offer an introduction to the fun and challenge of ridingand horse care, establishing a foundation of safety habits and knowledge. Horse Management focuses on acquiring the skills related to care and handling of the mount along with related equipment and trailer safety. The beginning level member also learns and, can be evaluated, on their riding skills on the flat and over fences, if desired, with safety, security and basic balance as the primary focus.
The intermediate certification levels (C-1 and C-2 HMX) emphasize growing independence and responsibility in the care of one’s mount and tack while becoming a more competent rider. Similar to the beginning level, the intermediate levels focus on advancement and evaluation of Horse Management skills as well as development towards a secure, independent seat, increased control and confidence in all phases of riding. All Horsemasters Groups assign a Liaison who serves at the discretion of the District Commissioner, Center Administrator, or Regional Supervisor to interact and ensure communication with the local Pony Club, Riding Center or Region. The Liaison will help other adults learn more about horses, horse sports and Pony Club. Part of the job of Liaison will be to return the necessary paperwork, including responding to USPC questionnaires. The application process does not automatically guarantee that a group will be permitted to start a Horsemasters Group, and remember until each person in a group has individually registered with USPC and paid all membership fees, that person is not a member and may not participate in any Horsemasters activities.
The Liaison will work with the DC, CA or RS to facilitate the Horsemasters program: identify instructors and certification examiners, set up lessons and lectures, explain the expectations and paperwork to adult members, oversee certification tests and be the local contact when adults in your area have questions. Of equal importance, you’ll be developing a network of important friends, the Horsemasters, who will be able to help your local club, center or region! We know you’re going to have a great time!
Volunteerism is a big part of the Horsemasters Program, and is actually included in the Standards of Proficiency and Certifications. Leaders are encouraged to set up an internal process to ‘track’ and reward volunteer efforts within their club, center and region.
Horsemasters Program members are Corporate Members of USPC and pay an Activity Fee. Clubs may, at the discretion of the DC, require Horsemasters become friends of the local club and charge a nominal.
